Production of Feed Quality Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) For Poultry Industry

The use of palm kernel cake (PKC) in the poultry feed is limited due to the higher content of fibrous material in the meal contributed mainly by shell and dirt which exceeds 6%. The fibrous component consists mainly insoluble mannose-based polysaccharides or Mannan, which being quite high and not suitable for manogastric animals like chicken and pig. Hence, the time has come to find alternatives by substituting imported fodder with more local feed material in the feed blend. MPOB in collaboration with Hur Far Engineering Works Sdn. Bhd (HFEWSB) has developed a pre-cleaning system consisting  of double stage winnowing column to reduce  shell content in kernel to <4% prior to the oil extraction process. This low shell kernel will be used as a raw material by kernel crushing plant to produce high quality crude palm kernel oil and high nutrient content of PKC by implementing a pre-cleaning system to further remove shell and dirt content in kernel. Crushing of kernel contain < 4%  shell produces feed quality PKC which can be utilized as an ingredient up to 40% in the poultry feed formulation.  The reduction of shell content in PKC to <8% will significantly reduce the crude fibre content to 15%.  It also increases protein content up to 18% and thus reduces dependence on imported protein based material such as soyabean and corn.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Objective

• To produce feed quality palm kernel cake (PKC) that is superior in quality compared to existing commercial PKC as chicken feed, thus allowing higher ration of PKC as an ingredient in the feed blend. 

• To help the poultry industry to get cheaper feed material and achieves value addition to Malaysian PKC in the local and world markets.
