Continous Sterilization
(Officer In-charge: Dr. Sivasothy Kandiah)
In the continuous sterilization system, developed jointly by MPOB and CB Industrial Product Sdn. Bhd., oil palm fresh fruit bunches are first conditioned using a double-roll bunch crusher to disrupt the close-knit arrangement of fruits to facilitate steam penetration. The conditioned bunches are subsequently heated using live steam at atmospheric pressure while they are conveyed using the forward and return paths of a multi-deck scraper conveying system. The retention time in the continuous sterilization system is adjusted to ensure complete stripping of fruits from bunch stalks. Pre-heating is carried out immediately after bunch conditioning to minimize the rise in free fatty acid content due to bruising by the bunch crusher. Post-heating of the stripped fruits is carried out to maximize the oil and kernel extraction efficiencies.
MPOB’s technology partner, CB Industrial Product, has to-date sold 98 palm oil mills based on the new system to customers in Malaysia, Indonesia, Central America and Africa.
Advantages
-
Cost of building a complete mill is approximately the same or lower than a conventional mill.
-
Radical changes in mill design simplify mill operation.
-
Steam losses due to supply/demand imbalance are avoided.
-
Less need for manual firing of boilers to cope with fluctuating steam demand.
-
The steady-state steam demand leads to higher boiler efficiency and lower black smoke emission from boilers.
-
Process-related problems arising from fluctuations in steam pressure and electrical voltage are avoided.
-
Less cleaning of mill is needed since spillages of fruits and oil is avoided.
-
The number of process operators is reduced by 50 percent.
-
Improvements in monitoring and control of milling processes and equipment.
-
Facilitates the building of palm oil mills having smaller footprints.
-
Significant improvements in operator safety since the use pressure vessels, sterilizer cages, rail tracks, overhead cranes, tippers, transfer carriages and tractors are not required.
-
Higher oil extraction and better oil and kernel quality.
-
Substantial savings in maintenance costs.
