Developmet of a New Palm Oil Clarification Process Based on Evaporation
(Officer In-charge: Dr. Sivasothy Kandiah)
The problem faced with biological treatment of effluent has prompted a search for alternative solutions for making palm oil mills more environmentally-friendly. One solution is to modify processes in the mill so that the quality of effluent discharged is significantly reduced. A novel clarification process for achieving this may provide the impetus for revolutionizing the treatment, disposal and utilization of effluent in palm oil mills. In the new process, the large amount of oil in the undiluted press liquor is used as a fluidizing agent to facilitate the use of a multiple-effect evaporation system to remove a significant amount of water in an energy-efficient manner.
